How to use the playlist in Google Chrome browser?

Google Chrome introduced the playlist feature in Chrome version 89.0 to make it more user-friendly. The Reading List can have a collection of pages and it is a great alternative to bookmarks. You can add any page to the list and mark it as done when you’re done reading.

I often come across a lot of intriguing content while browsing the web. But, since I’m already absorbed in another task, the idea is to save it for later reading.

In that regard, I could have added this website to the Bookmarks tab. However, I generally prefer to maintain a safe distance from the bookmarks section of the Chrome browser, unless it’s something I have to revisit often.

Indeed, finding the right site from the multitude of sites already stored in bookmarks is a rather difficult task in itself. And I guess many users would echo this thought as well.

So what else could we do? Well if you are a Chrome user then there is good news.

Google Chrome Playlist Function

The browser recently added a new Reading list feature that allows you to save desired items and access them when needed. This is somewhat similar to the Microsoft Edge collection list but has additional benefits. Most importantly, you can sync with your Google account and access it on all paired devices.

The fact that Google Chrome is available on all popular operating systems, including Windows, MacOS, Android, and iOS, turns out to be the icing on the cake. So if you are ready to give this feature a try, this guide will help you out. Here are the detailed steps to activate and use Chrome’s new playlist functionality.

Enable Reading List in Chrome

While the feature has moved to Chrome version 89 and above, it appears to be rolling out in stages. As a result, many users still fail to access it. But you can easily reduce this waiting time and immediately activate the playlist.

Here are the steps to enable the playlist in Chrome:

  1. Launch Google Chrome on the computer.
  2. Click on the Aftervertical 3dots icon for the menu list.
  3. Head to Settings> Help> About Google Chrome.
  4. If the the version is less than or equal to 88, then update the Chrome browser.
Update the Google Chrome browser to the latest versionThis will update Google Chrome and restart the browser.
  5. Type chrome: // flags in the address bar and press the key Enter.
  6. Now look for the Reading list and select from the results.
    Turn on the playlist indicator
  7. Change your state of Default at Enabled.
  8. Click on the Revive button.

The browser will now restart and activate the new Playlist button at the far right of the bookmarks bar.

Keep in mind that this is an experimental feature, so if you experience browser instability, consider disabling it and waiting for the stable deployment.

Add a site to Chrome’s Reading List

Once you activate the aforementioned indicator, a new Playlist button will appear in the bookmark bar. It’s time to add the site of your choice to the list.

Here are the steps to add a webpage or site to Chrome Reading List:

  1. Open the desired website in Chrome.
  2. Click on the Bookmark iconbookmark star icon in the URL bar.
    Chrome Add to playlist option
  3. To select Add to playlist option from the drop-down list options.

That’s it. The page or site has now been successfully added to the list. You can click on the Reading list button to check the addition. By any chance, if the playlist does not appear, you can display the favorites bar by using Ctrl + Change + B chrome shortcut keys.

Likewise, you can add an unlimited number of pages or site links to the reading list and refer to it later. We have complete control and manage the list easily. Chrome will also sync the added page with the Google account and available on all devices.

Manage Chrome Reading List

We can add multiple web pages to the Reading List and find them under the Reading List tab appearing in the bookmarks bar. You can manage the list and delete pages that are no longer needed or mark them as complete when you have finished reading.

Here are the steps to manage Chrome playlist:

  1. Click on the Reading list button on the bookmarks bar.
Chrome playlist on bookmarks barThere will be two sections: Unread and Pages you read.
  2. Click on the check mark mark as THE PAGES YOU HAVE READ.
Chrome Reading List Delete page or mark as read
  3. On the other hand, hit the X icon to remove any item from the reading list.

Any change on one device will be reflected on other devices synced by Google. The feature that I personally miss is categorizing the list using a folder structure like Microsoft Edge Collections.

Bottom Line: Chrome Playlist

It all came from this guide on how you can use and manage the Reading List in Chrome. It’s certainly a nifty addition to an already feature-rich collection offered by the Silicon Valley giant.

You no longer need to be dependent on third-party applications or extensions such as Pockets for this task. The new built-in playlist is an ultimate replacement.

However, on the other hand, the slow deployment of this feature may cause the user to be reluctant to try this feature. This is because not everyone is comfortable with the idea of managing the experimental feature set of a browser. As a result, it might not be welcomed by everyone until Google adds this list to the stable version.
